The Most Scenic Drives Across France

Reading Time: 2 mins

When you’re stuck in a traffic jam on the morning commute, or racing down the motorway in a hurry, driving can feel like a chore rather than a desirable activity. However, a drive doesn’t have to be a dull way of getting from A to B, and the scenery on some routes are worth the drive in itself, irrespective of the destination you’re trying to reach. France has some of the most beautiful countryside in Europe, and there are plenty of scenic drives which show off this country in all its glory. If you want to know more about some of the most scenic car trips you can take across France, see below for our round up.

Route Napoléon

This 200 mile route from Grenoble to Grasse replicates the one taken by Napoléon in 1815, and the track is punctuated with several French Imperial Eagle statues. This route is often named one of the top ten best drives in the world, and it takes in some of Europe’s most stunning scenery. It can get busy during peak times, but in most cases you can complete the drive in around eight hours.

La Route des Grandes Alpes

If you have a bit more time on your hands, try the 460 mile route from Lake Geneva to Nice via the French Alps. Passing through many of the Alps’ high passes, expect more spectacular mountain scenery, picturesque villages and smooth winding roads.

The Alsace Wine Route

Even if you’re not a big wine drinker, this route through the vineyards of Alsace is well worth taking. Beginning in Strasbourg, the trail winds 105 miles through the eastern foothills of the Vosges, ending in the city of Mulhouse. Stop off in the many charming villages along the way to sample both alcoholic and nonalcoholic local drinks, and soak up the stunning landscapes.

Provence’s Lavender Fields

The vibrantly coloured lavender fields typically bloom between late June and early August, and there are several driving routes you can take, with an average of around 80 miles. Try the route from Grasse to Castellane to take advantage of the free tours of the perfumeries in Grasse, or drive the 75 miles from Nyons to Sisteron for a side of Provence that’s more off the beaten track.
